A large pilgrimage site also provided sustenance for the pilgrims who travelled from distant places. For this reason, huge buildings were erected next to the church providing for market area, kitchen and heatable dinning room. However, not all pilgrims could afford this accommodation. Lots of them slept and ate in tents or in the open in front of the church.
