This church served as a house of God for the inhabitants of the late antique Iuenna settlement on the Hemmaberg Mountain. There were relics of a martyr buried under the altar; this is why the priests and the church donors wanted to be laid to rest in close vicinity of their bones hoping for their help with resurrection. The rest of population was buried outside the settlement.
